A stunning Indus Valley terracotta vessel, featuring vivid polychromatic decorations. The vessel is cylindrical in shape, sitting atop a flat circular base, with straight walls and a flat shoulder that tapers into a squat, splayed cylindrical neck and mouth. The main register of the vessel is decorated with two stylised quadrupeds, possibly an ibex and a feline, rendered in vibrant red and green pigments, and outlined in a black pigment. The animals are separated by two panels of geometric design, one consisting concentric circles within a square and the other features undulating and zigzagging lines, each enriched with the same red and green pigmentations. The shoulders also feature a geometric decoration of alternating ochre, red and green panels, divided by black borders. The lip itself is further adorned by thick black band. The base is unworked. Earthly encrustations to the surface and signs of wear as consistent with its age, such as minor chips and scratches on the body and rim of the vessel.
The Indus Valley Civilisation was situated on the Indus River and was one of three early and widespread cradles of civilisation along with Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. At its peak, the Indus Valley Civilisation, which included such sites as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, may have had a population of over five million, who developed new techniques in pottery, seal carving, and metallurgy.
