A very refined ikebana flower basket 花籠 (hanakago) by Kenichirô Ito 伊藤賢一郎 (b. 1943), crafted from brown susutake 煤竹 (‘smoked bamboo’).
The basket features a rounded body with a long loop handle, constructed from tightly plaited, very thin strands of bamboo in an open X-pattern, accented with diagonal lines on the top. It comes complete with a separate brown lacquered bamboo segment vase, a cylindrical container ideal for flower arrangements. The underside of the basket bears the signature of the artist.
Kenichirô Ito, born in 1943 as the eldest son of Ito Jinji II 二代伊藤仁濟, began his artistic career under the guidance of his uncle, Ito Yoshibumi 伊藤乃武, following his father’s early passing. He later established his own practice and became a renowned bamboo craftsman. Ito was selected twice for the prestigious Nitten exhibition 日展, with his first acceptance at the age of eighteen, and has also participated in the Chubu Selection Exhibition 中部選抜展. He lectured on bamboo crafts for the tea flower ceremony at the Chubu Nihon Culture Centre 中日文化センター and held annual exhibitions of his new works at the Matsuzakaya Main Store 松坂屋本店.
