Excellent condition

As a photographer based in East Africa for a number of years, Francesco Broli accompanied me on some of the most challenging assignments in journalism. Civil disturbances. Coups. Wars. He always jumped at the chance to document the suffering. And while on the road, Francesco leapt over obstacles as we made our way through the jungles of Congo. He sprung over barriers inside refugee camps in Kenya. He bounded over gullies on the roadsides of Burundi. Loaded down by photography equipment, I watched as he jumped in Sudan, in Rwanda, in Uganda. During all of this, Francisco would remind me of the idyllic place where he was from, Lake Como, which he would describe with a faraway look in his eye. When I saw his photographs, I was not surprised. They show both the beauty of this special spot in Italy and the adventure that has always drawn Francesco’s eye. His subjects’ epic jumps are framed by nature and caught in midair. His photographs capture pure joy, as though Francesco is giving his lenses a counter to all they captured before.
