Ivan Ivanovich Golikov (1735-1801) - Russian historian, entrepreneur, court adviser. Even as a child, he was interested in the personality of the first Russian Emperor Peter the Great. However, he continued the family trading business until, in 1781, he found himself under investigation on charges of duty-free import of “French vodka.” At the personal request of Count Alexander Romanovich Vorontsov (1741–1805) and on the occasion of the opening of the monument to Peter I in St. Petersburg in 1782, Ivan Ivanovich was pardoned and prohibited from engaging in business. After his release, he publicly swore an oath to write the history of Peter the Great, to which he devoted the remaining 20 years of his life.
Part 10 contains charters and letters of Peter the Great. Before the appearance of the works of N.G. Ustryalov and S.M. Solovyov, Golikov’s monumental publication was the main work on the era of Peter I. Pushkin used Golikov’s book when creating the poem “Poltava” and “The History of Peter”.
