Klaus Lehnartz, born in 1936 in Remscheid, the son of a coffee mill manufacturer, lives since 1957 in Berlin as an independent photojournalist. After an engineering internship, he studied photographic technology from 1957 to 1959 and trained as a journalist.

He gained his first professional experience with the "Große Österreich-Illustrierte", Vienna, with the "Daily Mirror", London, and with "Bild-Berlin". In 1957, he began collaborating with the Landesbildstelle Berlin, and from 1973 to 1991, as a contract photographer for the Press and Information Office of the Federal Government, he recorded all relevant events in Berlin.

Important topics of his work are the division of Germany, the GDR, the fall of the Berlin Wall and its consequences in the cityscape. Klaus Lehnartz, member of the German Journalists Association and the German Society for Photography, received the Photokina Prize in 1959. In addition to exhibitions on various cities, he also published numerous publications, including Berlin, East Germany and New York.
