RARE CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN PLATE OR DISH Seville Cathedral

A rare octagonal plate or dish with indented corners, decorated in underglazed cobalt blue and overglaze famille rose enamels, which include blue, pink, white, different shades of green, yellow, iron-red and black.

Incredibly preserved details in gold.

The well is painted with a riverscape, with a Chinese lady standing on the bow of a sampan guiding the boat with a single oar on the left, in front of a blue rock heightened in gold, behind which grow large flower sprays with a pink peony and lotus blossom.
A bird is flying overhead, above a carp and two ducks swimming in the river.

A large building representing the Sacristía Mayor (main sacristy of the Cathedral of Seville) is depicted on the right, behind a tall iron-red and underglaze cobalt blue wall with battlements and towers.

The Seville Cathedral is the only Spanish building represented on Chinese export porcelain. This was most probably inspired on a print by the French artist Louis Meunier, dating to 1668 and inscribed “La maison de la Bourse et La grande eglise de Seville par deriere / Iglesia mayor de Sevilla por el lado de la Lonja.”

A trellis and coin pattern band in gold on an iron-red ground, with a gold ruyi head on each corner, is painted on the rim.
