【Product details】

This elegant Late Edo period or Later wooden towel rack is adorned with exquisite gold maki-e decorations featuring various Japanese family crests on a black lacquer base. Among the depicted crests are the Katabami mon (wood sorrel crest) and the Itowa-shihō mankahollyhock mon (four-directional hollyhock crest with circular string border).

The Katabami mon symbolizes resilience and growth, as the wood sorrel plant spreads quickly and thrives in difficult conditions. It was a popular crest among several samurai families, including the Makino clan, who were prominent during the Edo period. This crest was also used by other families such as the Toki and Maeda clans, reflecting their strength and endurance.

The Itowa-shihō mankahollyhock mon combines a circular string motif, representing unity and continuity, with the hollyhock flower, which signifies abundance, protection, and reverence for nature. The hollyhock flower (aoi) is famously associated with the Tokugawa clan, the rulers of Japan during the Edo period, who used the "Triple Hollyhock" crest as a symbol of their power and authority.

There are two additional crests on the rack, but their names are less common and remain unidentified. These designs collectively reflect the prestige and heritage of the families that used them.

The piece shows signs of age, including wear, small scratches, chips, stains, discoloration, and some oxidation and green rust on the metal fittings. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the condition.
