A bit of history:
When Prince Albert died in 1861 Queen Victoria plunged in to mourning taking most of the country with her. It became the fashion to wear all things black, tortoiseshell were carved in to many forms. At first they were plain then decoration crept in. Tortoiseshell was inlaid with gold and silver intricate designs such as this brooch. Today they are very collectable as reproductions cannot be made.
