This is Artin's detailed account of his trip through the Sudan, and his epistolary impressions of Britain's
role in the development of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, an area over which Great Britain and Egypt exercised
joint sovereignty.
Yacoub Artin (1842-1919) was a higly accomplished orientalist and educationalist and a ''staunch supporter
of the British occupation in Sudan". For maby years Artin Pasha, an Armenian by birth, slaved for Egypt.
and held the distinguished post of Minister of Education.
Pasha's book consistsa of a series of letters to his wife, with general notes at the end, comparing the
existing native of the Sudan to the Germans in the time of Tacitus.
It is distinctly flattering to Sir Reginald Wingate and the British officers, civil and military,
who carry onthe administration of the 1.000.000 square miles of African territory labelled on
the map "The Anglo-Egyptian Sudan"
