Elizabeth Gaskell - Lot of two: North and South / Cranford. The Folio Society Edition - 1987-2003

Lot of two very beautiful editions of “North and South” and "Cranford" by Elizabeth Gaskell (1810 - 1865), published by The Folio Society in London.

"North and South" - first Folio Society edition, first printing, published in 2003, introduced by Jenny Uglow and illustrated by Alexy Pendle. It is printed on Caxton wove paper, with colour frontispiece and nine black and white illustrations. It is bound in full cloth printed with a design by Frances Button.

The book depicts the differences between the north of England and the south of England, both geographically as well as through its characters, and presents a nuanced view of both the rich and poorer classes.

The book has 436 pages. Its dimensions are - without slipcase: height 24 cm, length 16.3 cm, width: 4 cm; with slipcase on: height 25 cm, length 17 cm, width: 4.4 cm.

The book is virtually unopened, in mint, pristine condition without any faults at view. It is unread, it has no wear to the cover and no wear to pages. It completely maintains the very high standard levels of Folio Society publications.

The protective red slipcase shows no shelf wear. It has a superficial stain at its outer upper right side from handling that does not affect at all the overall aesthetics (please see detailed pictures).

"Cranford" - first Folio Society edition, first printing, published in 1987, introduced by Susan Hill, illustrated with wood engravings by Joan Hassall. It is printed on Edinburgh white laid paper. Red cloth spine with blue title label. Yellow decorated laid paper boards.

It is one of the better-known novels of Elizabeth Gaskell. It was first published, in eight installments in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. The book is made up of a collection of satirical sketches, which portray changing small town customs and values in mid-Victorian England, a portrait of people and customs that were already becoming anachronisms.

The book has 201 pages. Its dimensions are - without slipcase: height 22.3 cm, length 14.9 cm, width: 2 cm; with slipcase on: height 23.5 cm, length 15.5 cm, width: 2.5 cm.
