Heads and skulls were recurring images in Jean-Michel Basquiat's work, inspired by his childhood fascination with Gray's Anatomy. The book was given to him at age seven by his mother, and sparked the artists's lifelong interest in anatomy. In his paintings Basquiat often depicted faces as mask-like, in response to the exclusion of black and African American artists from art history.
