John Vanderbank (1694-1739), Attributed to - A three quarter - length portrait of Sir John Barnard Mayor of London in 1738

Attributed to John Vanderbank (British, 1694-1739),( formerly attributed to William Howgarth) Portrait of Sir John Barnard (c.1685-1764), the merchant and Whig politician, three quarter length, dressed in his ceremonial robes when serving as the Lord Mayor of London in 1738 Medium : Oil on canvas, Provenance : By direct family descent from Sir John Barnard Overall size with the frame 42 cm x 35 cm x 4 cm and the painting measuring 32 cm x 24 cm A very decorative and collectible 18th century oil on canvas painting attributed to John Vanderban of Sir John Barnard who was a prominent London merchant of the period and also a Whig party politician. The three - quarter length portrait depicts Barnrad dressed in his ceremonial robes when serving as the Lord Mayor of London in 1738. Vanderbank received his training as a portraitist under Sir Godfrey Kneller before becoming a successful artist and teacher of art. He is noted primarily for his portraiture, he also worked as a book illustrator, and produced numerous small oil versions of scenes from Don Quixote. Vanderbank later established an academy for life-drawing at St Martin's Lane, which included the artist William Hogarth amongst its members. Interesting the painting had historically been an ascribed / attributed to Hogarth. The painting is from the sitters family by decent thus offering good provenance. Condition report. In good cleaned and lived condition within its most likely original gilt carved 18th century English frame. There are some areas of craquelure. The surface is in stable and the canvas is in good tension. Please note. The frame that is included in the pictures above has been added to the artwork by a third party/the seller, as such it’s not an integral part of the object. The frame is being provided to you at no additional costs so that when your artwork arrives at your house you can immediately display it on your wall. As such any damages to the frame itself, that do not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request a cancellation. We would also point out that whilst we insure all paintings before shipping that we have no control over shipping once we have sent the painting . The successful bidder will be responsible for paying any import duties and any associated VAT in the country of destination . Please refer to the auction terms regarding this before bidding. All of the art that we sell is insured for shipping ( subject to the above ). All shipping is professionally packed. . we have been getting most paintings shipped to most parts of the EU with 5 working days but we cannot guarantee this . We have on a couple of occasions experienced a few delays with customs in certain countries over the last few weeks. Please Note: Studio/Gallery photos of paintings on an easel on the published material are intended only to represent accurately the size of the painting within that room environment. Also refer to the shipping costs and note the auctioneers disclaimer regarding potential customs charges. We cannot calculate these as they are levied in the country of destination and the amount payable is determined by customs there and not by ourselves or the auctioneers. We have experienced some customs charging higher than expected import taxes; so we would advise bidders to attempt the establish the likely excise duties that your own National customs will charge you before bidding and committing to buy the painting. We must emphasise it is NOT the UK customs. -------------------------------------------------- Please check out our paintings and objects in the Tableau and Catawiki eclectic collector auction running from the 6th to the 22nd of September, our extensive collection in the British auction running from the 13th of September and paintings offered in the Museum and French 1850-1950 auctions also running from the 6th of September all on Catawiki ! -------------------------------------------------
