A fine Western Asiatic bronze axehead featuring a broad shaft-hole with shallow raised circumferential rib and a vertical rib to the rear. The blade flares out towards the sharpened convex edge. There is an attractive patination and some chips and earthy encrustations to the surface.
Many grand civilizations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity are witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Bronze objects were created using a mould, the liquid bronze would be poured into a ceramic mould and once hardened, the mould would be destroyed. Therefore, each piece is individual and difficult to make an exact replica.
Measurements: (circa) L 14.5cm x W 7.8cm
Provenance: Ex Abelita family collection, acquired 1980-2015.
