Ancient Roman Millefiori Glass Bead Necklace with Fish-shaped Pendant - Stunning!
Circa 2nd-3rd century AD
This lovely restrung necklace, suitable for contemporary wear, is composed of substantial millefiori glass beads with various designs. The beads are interspersed with spherical celadon-coloured beads, flanked by small terracotta-coloured disc-shaped beads.
Millefiori glass is a type of glassware that features intricate, multicoloured patterns resembling flowers. The term "millefiori" comes from the Italian words for "thousand flowers," reflecting the glass’s decorative appearance. The production of millefiori glass involved creating glass canes with layered colours, which were then sliced into cross-sections to reveal the floral patterns. These slices were arranged in moulds and fused together through heating, creating a cohesive and decorative glass object. The technique was highly popular in the Roman Empire, especially between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. Millefiori glass was primarily used to create small luxury items such as beads, bowls, and vases, prized for their vibrant and intricate designs. The process of making millefiori glass was complex and required great skill, which made these items expensive and highly valued.
