The name of the decoration comes from the concentration camp Auschwitz Birkenau (which in the period of People's Poland under the name "Oświęcim" was a symbol of the martyrdom of people in concentration camps). Many Poles and Jews of various nationalities lost their lives here On the obverse there is a symbol of a concentration camp prisoner from the war period, and on the reverse there is an inscription "To the prisoners of Nazi concentration camps".
