Ernesto Yerena Montejano was born in El Centro, California, in an agricultural environment near the Mexican border. Nourished by these two cultures, his artistic practice reflects his point of view on the interactions between Mexican communities living on both sides of the border.

The artist shares the story of his identity conflict, which he compares to what many Chicanos experience. Although Yerena identifies with the Chicano movement, he also identifies with the indigenous populations of the American continent who are often represented in his work. His works depict his frustration at the oppression suffered by his community, but also tries to bring his people together in defence of their dignity and their rights. He is also a friend of Shepard Fairey with whom he regularly produces works.
