Remarkable Four-panel folding screen - It depicts at the foot of the mountain, three knowledgeable old men are sitting around an article, appreciating it, discussing it, and learning from it. Next to them are two children, who are reading and studying while adding firewood to boil water. In the whole work, whether it is the mountains and trees, or the characters’ features, expressions and movements, or the water-boiling utensils, etc., the painter’s vivid depiction of the characters’ features reflects the painter’s superb painting skills. There is no doubt that this is an absolute masterpiece of the era. Artist: Fujishima Kasen藤島 華僊(1866-1929)Ukiyo-e artist and Japanese painter from the Meiji to Showa periods. He was a pupil of Fukushima Ryuho. He was born in 1866 in Numatakuramura, Tone-gun, Kozuke Province (present-day Gunma Prefecture). His real name was Tokushiro. As an ukiyo-e artist, he was known as Fujishima Toshimi, and later he was known as Eiryu and Kasen. He loved painting from an early age, and at the age of 12 he studied under Aoyama Suizan, mastering the Nanshu style of painting. Later he moved to Tokyo and studied genre painting under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and studied under Kobayashi Eitaku, whose painting skills were recognized by Eitaku and he became his adopted son. He also studied under Kubota Beisen, developing the Beisen school of painting. He was skilled in portrait painting, and was particularly good at Kannon and Arhat paintings. He was twice selected for the Bunten Exhibition, and also exhibited his works at various exhibitions, expositions, and collaborative exhibitions, winning silver and bronze awards and certificates of commendation, and devoted himself to the development of the Chukyo art world.
