This intensely chromatic and delicately drawn work depicts the Virgin Mary as Guadalupe, immersed in a golden mandorla. The author respects the iconographic patterns of Guadalupe that were established in the 16th century, following models initiated by indigenous painters such as Marcos Cípac. Dressed in a blue mantle with stars and a tunic, an angel holds a crescent moon beneath her feet. Around the oval, floral bouquets complete the decoration. Joining her hands in prayer, she bows her head with a golden crown. She humbly closes her eyes.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Marian invocation of the Catholic Church. Its image is the main worship center in the Basilica of Guadalupe, located north of Mexico City.
The Cusco Art School came to life during the Spanish conquest of Peru in the 1530s. Indigenous and mestizo artists created vibrant religious artwork, adding native elements and rich colors to their paintings. Their works often featured the Virgin Mary, archangels, and saints, adorned with gold leaf overlays and floral borders.
