Originally derived from the Hindu deity Indra’s retinue, Virūpākṣa was incorporated into Buddhism as a protector of the teachings and a guardian of believers. The figure holds a scroll and brush, believed to be used to record human deeds and report them to Taishakuten, his superior. At Virūpākṣa's feet is a "jaki," a symbol of malevolent spirits or demons, which he tramples to demonstrate the power of the Four Heavenly Kings to safeguard Buddhist law from evil. The statue is adorned with kirikane 截金, a delicate technique where gold leaf is cut and applied to create intricate designs, enhancing the fine details of the figure. There are minor signs of wear, small scratches, dust, and signs of use consistent with age, but the statue remains in good condition overall. Please refer to the photos for a detailed view of its state. The item comes with its original wooden box. Dimensions: approx.
