Okamoto Toyohiko (1773-1845) was born in what is now the city of Kurashiki, to a merchant family that ran a wine shop. He went to Edo (now Tokyo) and there apprenticed himself to Goshun. He was given the familiar name Shigen and was called Shime. He alternatively signed his works with the names Tangaku, Koson, Rikyo, and Choshinsai and was a leading painter of the Shijo School.
