2017 Alves de Sousa, Abandonado - Douro - 3 Botellas (0,75 L)
N.º 90250623
2017 - ABANDONADO Alves de Sousa - DOURO, PORTUGAL - Red wine
A vineyard passing the age of 80 years, with several flaws derived from a partial abandonment for some years. In an area of intense exposure and with huge schist outcrops on the surface where not a single grass remains. The people of the Quinta soon dubbed it the "Abandoned Vineyard".
For years they tried to recover the vineyard and replant the vanished vines. Until they gave up. Despite all their care, only the oldest vines were able to subsist in such extreme conditions. In 2004 they decided to isolate it for the first time in the Quinta da Gaivosa winery. It immediately revealed a unique personality and character. They decided to bottle it as a tribute to the equally unique old vines of the Douro, which will one day disappear.
Deep ruby colour. Great complexity and aromatic freshness, with unusual balsamic and tar notes, liquorice and black fruits, typical of the Abandonado vineyard. Mouth full of harmony, with intensity, but also delicacy, minerality and an extraordinary purity of fruit. You can feel the schist soils, the surrounding forest, the freshness of the altitude, in a pure expression of the nature of the vineyard. An exercise in pure elegance and class from one of the most iconic vineyards in the Douro and Portugal.
