Ogura graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he studied under Yamazaki Kakutarō in the Department of Crafts, specializing in lacquer arts. Known for his innovative technique of applying maki-e (sprinkled picture) over dry lacquer, Ogura blended traditional lacquer artistry with modern expression. His works were frequently exhibited at Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), and he served as a professor at Toyama University. This vase, "Gokuraku Haze" (Paradise Goby), showcases a stunning design of black lacquer goby elegantly swimming across a rich vermillion surface. The goby are intricately inlaid with raden (mother-of-pearl), adding a shimmering effect. The background features accents of gold leaf and nashiji, a technique where fine gold flakes are sprinkled onto wet lacquer, resulting in a luxurious and elegant texture. This piece transcends the traditional concepts of maki-e and lacquerware, presenting a bold, artistic expression. The base of the vase is signed in vermilion lacquer, and the inside of the original wooden box lid features a handwritten signature and stamp. There are minor scuffs present, but overall, the vase is in good condition. Please review the photos for further details on the condition. Dimensions: approx.
