ABBA
-is one of the most successful and iconic pop groups of all time. The band was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972 and consisted of two couples: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad. The band name is made up of the initials of their first names: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid.

Beginnings and breakthrough
ABBA began their career in the early 1970s when Benny and Björn, who were already successful in other bands, joined forces with Agnetha and Anni-Frid to make music. Their first big success came in 1974 when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Waterloo”. This victory brought them international attention and was the beginning of an unprecedented career.

Musical style
ABBA's music is often categorized as “pop”, but their songs are a mixture of different styles, including disco, pop, glam rock and even elements of classical music. Their melodies are catchy and characterized by harmonious vocals and layered arrangements. ABBA often worked with the latest studio technology, which made their sound particularly concise and innovative.

Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus in particular were responsible for the songwriting and production, while Agnetha and Frida were known for their distinctive, harmonious vocals.

ABBA had an incredible string of hits in the 1970s and early 1980s, including:

Success and separation
ABBA was extremely successful throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Their albums sold millions of copies worldwide and their music videos, which often featured glamorous costumes and creative visual effects, made them pioneers of the music video format.

In the late 1970s, however, the marriages between Agnetha and Björn and Benny and Frida began to break up, which ultimately affected the band's dynamics. In 1982, ABBA announced a break, which later turned out to be the final separation. Officially, there was never a formal break-up, but they did not work together again after 1982.

Afterlife and comeback
Despite their break-up, ABBA experienced a renaissance in the following decades. Their music remained popular worldwide thanks to numerous best-of albums, remixes and the success of the musical “Mamma Mia!” (1999) and its film adaptation (2008). The group's songs were seen in a new light and rediscovered by new generations.

In 2021, ABBA made a spectacular comeback with the album “Voyage”, their first studio album in almost 40 years. This comeback was celebrated worldwide, and the album, as well as the resulting concerts featuring digital effigies of the band members (the so-called “ABBAtare”), showed how much the group is still relevant today.

Legacy
ABBA is celebrated not only for their music, but also for their cultural influence. Their unique combination of catchy pop melodies, visual flamboyance and emotional depth makes them one of the most cherished and influential pop groups in music history.
