A. & E Castle / Charles Robinson (ill) - Our Sentimental Garden - 1914

"Our Sentimental Garden" by Agnes and Egerton Castle and illustrated by Charles Robinson - William Heinemann, London - 1914 first UK edition - 20cmx15cm - condition: very good, original binding, some rubbing, inscription ffep, all plates and illustrations by Charles Robinson present. This book, about the creation of a garden by Agnes and Egerton Castle, was copiously illustrated in both black and white and colour by Charles Robinson, the middle of the three Heath-Robinson brothers, of whom the youngest William Heath of the various mad inventions is the best known. It is a lavishly produced early coffee table book and was published by Heinemann in September 1914 just at the outbreak of the great war and is a kind of summing up of the Edwardian idyll, if such a thing ever existed which I suspect it did for people such as the authors of this book the owners of the garden in question. So the book and its illustrations have an added poignancy, a kind of last huzzah. The elegant Agnes in her Dutch Garden in a picture hat, looks much as I imagine Lucia of the Mapp & Lucia books by E F Benson might look in her own special Ghiardino Segretto. Lovely subtle watercolours and line work and all in the tail end of art nouveau style.
