W. Heath Robinson (ill) - Bill the Minder - 1912

"Bill The Minder" illustrated by W. Heath Robinson - Constable, London - 1912 first UK edition - 25cmx18cm - condition: about fine copy, tipped-in colour frontis and 14 further colour plates. Black & white illustration throughout the text by W. Heath Robinson, in mylar cover. Exceptional copy of this famous Heath Robinson title. Simon Heneage in the ODNB states that in the early period of Heath Robinson's career, "his best books were his own fantasy Bill the Minder (1912) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (1914), in which, most notably in line drawings, he surpassed himself". A contemporary review in the Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art stated that "the illustrations are delightful, particularly some of those in colours" and The Bookman noted that "the humour of [the] tale of 'Bill the Minder' and the humour of the pictures is so delicious that when you look at it you almost wish you were a child again yourself, and when you read it you are one, and don't want to grow up any more." Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 8 December 1912, Supplement, p. x; The Bookman, December 1912, p. 150.
