Okamoto was the patriarch of the most prolific family of modern Kokeshi doll production.
He started making Sosaku dolls in 1950 as one of the first artists.
His early dolls won many awards, including the Prime Minister's Award. These were largely hand carved/painted on the lathe. Very few of these have been preserved.
However, in his later years he started making a souvenir style doll (Kindai). He founded a museum in Gunma, which is now maintained by his sons and daughters.
This beautiful doll features a beautifully detailed Camellia, also called Japanese Rose. The design is made by burning into the wood.
This fantastic example is 25 cm tall and in good shape.
