A fine selection of three Western Asiatic amuletic beads in the shape of a stylised reclining animal, possibly a lion. The pieces are made from an orange carnelian in various shapes, with differing degrees of translucency. All three show white inclusions, with the largest including some black inclusions as well. The amulets are perforated horizontally for suspension.
Near Eastern civilisations utilised a wide array of precious metals and semi-precious stones to create jewellery and amulets which would have been worn throughout life and death. Stones such as agate, carnelian, and turquoise, were valued for their delicate transparency and variety of vibrant colours. Depictions of animal figures were a popular choice, with creatures seen to be powerful or dangerous, such as lions and bulls, selected to represent the power of local deities and rulers.
