Questo, non appena la vide, se ne invaghì immediatamente e non esitò un attimo a dichiarargli il suo amore. La ragazza, colpita da tale dichiarazione, ricambiò con passione il sentimento del Moro, ma la loro storia iniziata con tanto ardore era destinata ad una vita breve. Ben presto la giovane scoprì che il suo amato doveva fare ritorno in Oriente dove ad attenderlo c’erano moglie e figli. Nel cuore della notte, sentitasi tradita ed umiliata, la ragazza si abbandonò ad un momento di gelosia e ira funesta uccidendo il suo Moro. Successivamente ne tagliò la testa e vi creò una sorta di vaso in cui piantò all’interno un germoglio di basilico di cui si prese cura giorno per giorno. Il Moro, in questo modo, non potendo più andar via sarebbe rimasto per sempre con lei. Intanto il basilico crebbe rigoglioso e destò l’invidia di tutti gli abitanti del quartiere che, per non essere da meno, si fecero costruire appositamente dei vasi di terracotta a forma di Testa di Moro.
