Mihai Cotiga - The blouse

Inspired by Henri Matisse's famous painting "La Blouse Roumaine," this artwork, titled "The Blouse," reinterprets the traditional Romanian garment with a modern twist. As a Romanian artist, I sought to infuse this piece with cultural heritage while introducing contemporary elements. Unlike Matisse’s rendition, which adhered more closely to the traditional design, my approach incorporates bold, modern patterns and vibrant colors. The central figure, an elderly woman, holds a bouquet of tulips, symbolizing both the beauty of tradition and the vibrancy of modernity. Her blouse, adorned with black and white patterns, stands out against the bright pink background, creating a striking contrast. The textured brushstrokes and the blend of colors emphasize the fusion of the old and the new, highlighting the evolution of cultural identity. "The Blouse" is a testament to the enduring influence of traditional Romanian attire and its reinterpretation through a contemporary lens. This piece is a celebration of heritage, modernity, and the timeless connection between past and present. The painting is oil on canvas mounted on a wooden stretcher. It comes shipped very carefully in a box directly from Mihai Cotiga’s studio. The painting is hand signed on the back and it will come with a certificate of authenticity. Mihai Cotiga is a painter based in Bucharest, Romania, whose works have been exhibited nationally and internationally. He uses his life events and thoughts to bring meaning into his work being driven by the curiosity to understand what is around us and the passion to always learn something new.
