Byzantine Earthenware 'Greek Fire' Hand Grenade - Great Ancient Warfare Artefact!
Circa 9th-11th century AD
This earthenware hollow vessel is reminiscent of an acorn in shape. Its design also includes a protruding spout with a circular opening. The exterior is decorated with carved and stamped designs.
Functioning as a hand grenade, this artefact was designed to be filled with Greek fire or other combustible substances. When thrown, the vessel would break upon impact, dispersing the contents and igniting upon contact with the target, making it a formidable weapon in Byzantine military strategies.
Dimensions: 115mm x 85mm; weight 355g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
