The cast or embossed metal tablets were used by pilgrims during their travels in the Middle Ages. These very light and easily transportable objects were bought in places of worship and used as a vow every time you wanted to dedicate a prayer to a particular saint and in that case they were left under the altar or during the journey for a particular prayer. Often this type of artifacts have been found along rivers because at that time crossing a river was not as simple as today when we find many bridges. Often the bridges that existed were far to reach, moreover frequently they were still Roman bridges which at that time were in a very bad state and at risk of collapse. Or you had to pay a ferryman or find a ford in the summer. In any case it was one of the most dangerous parts of the journeys and because of this pilgrims offered a sacred vow for the crossing.
