'Jumping Off The Stage at Kiyomizu'
In the old days, there was a custom of jumping from a high place to cure illness, to predict good fortune, or to fulfill love. People would make a wish to Kannon-sama and jump from the parapet of the stage at Kiyomizu-dera Temple. If the wish came true, the person would be unharmed, and if not, he or she would be reborn in paradise, a faith that did not fear death. Some people jumped off the stage with parasols. In 1872, the government issued a ban on jumping off the stage, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple took measures to prevent people from jumping off.
