Islámico Terracota Lampara de aceite (Sin Precio de Reserva)

A fine terracotta oil lamp dating back to the early Islamic Period, most commonly known as a slipper lamp. The shoulder is enriched by a raised vertical ridges surrounding a relatively large filling hole, and vine scrolls and circular motifs in relief near the nozzle. A conical knob handle is placed the top of the body, however is now unfortunately chipped. The reverse features a small ring foot, decorated a symmetrical pair of raised curved lines. There are some signs of the lamp being used, with the darkened nozzle. Some encrustation and wear consistent with age. Red terracotta lamps have also been described as slipper lamps because of the shape the lamp creates with handle poking up at the back along with the curvature of the body. Oil lamps made in different ways; either by hand, by wheel, or by mould. Mould became most popular as it could produce multiple lamps i.e. was more efficient. The moulds were made from plaster or clay. Measurements: Circa L 10.2cm x W 5.5cm x H 4.7cm Providence: From an ex SM collection, acquired 1970-1999
