岸連山 Kishi Renzan (1804-1859)
Painter of the Kishi school in Kyoto in the late Edo period. Studied under 岸駒 Ganku and succeeded to the Kishi school as an adopted son. He was a member of the Arisugawa-no-miya family. Together with 中島来章 Nakajima Raisho (1796-1871), 横山清暉 Yokoyama Seiki (1792-1864), 塩川文麟 Shiokawa Bunrin (1808-1877), he is regarded as one of the "Four Famous Heian School painters" of the late Edo period. From the decorative style of his early years, his later years were characterized by the mildness of the Shijo School, in which he painted familiar flowers, birds, and animals, making full use of light colors and sumi ink. He can be said to be the painter who triggered the modernization of the Kishi School. 岸竹堂 Kishi Chikudo (1826-1897) and 巨勢小石 Kose Shoseki (1843-1919) were among his students.
