When hit show ‘Mad Men’ hit our screens back in 2007, the world fell in love once again with the style and elegance of the 60s. Many men wanted to be like Don Draper, the show’s handsome leading star, and dreamt of having an office like his. We are inspired by the 60s and give you the tools on how to create the look and feel of a ‘Mad Men’ man cave.
Objects that have been in auction at Catawiki
1. An abstract painting
Art is the centerpoint of any room, and was always featured quite heavily on ‘Mad Men’. There was even a storyline around a painting by Mark Rothko, famous for his abstract expressionist work (he doesn’t see himself as an abstract expressionist though, because he didn’t want to adhere to any art movement). A modern painting is the necessary eyecather for any man cave.

2. Stylish furniture & design
Furniture is an important factor in setting the feel and look for a room. If you want to get the mid-century modern look, go for furniture made of darker woods, such as rosewood, and classic designers like Charles & Ray Eames.

3. A record player
Having a record player and an extensive collection of records just gives the room an aura unmatched by any other device. It’s not only the look, but also the act of putting on a record - holding a physical record in your hands - and the authentic sound that comes out that makes it absolutely essential.
4. Whisky
We’re sure you look back in awe at the days it was normal to drink during work hours, at least for the people at Mad Men's advertising agency Sterling Cooper. In Catawiki’s Whisky auction you can find lots of different bottles in different price categories, so you'll always have a special bottle at hand.
5. Globes
Globes are great as a finishing touch. They come in all shapes and sizes, but our favourite is as a home for the previously mentioned whisky: in the form of a bar cart. Keep an eye on the auctions every week for the moment when one comes up and in the meantime you might also look out for globe bookends or other types in our globes auction.
