Germany, 1941
Lienhard von Monkiewitsch studied Art in Braunschweig at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HBK) from 1964 to 1967 and Painting & Graphics with Alfred Winter-Rust from 1967 to 1969. From 1985, he worked in Los Angeles and had exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, London, and Tokyo. Lienhard von Monkiewitsch addresses the representation of space in his photographs. He became known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for his room-illusionistic works that only depict empty tiled floors. The viewer was challenged to complete the missing walls and fill the rooms with their own imagination. While Monkiewitsch initially used perspective, he later managed to describe space (since 1984) with deep, matte, absorbing colors leading to a black that seems to press forward from the canvas due to the special type of pigment application, suggesting the depth of infinite space. He is a representative of Concrete Art.
