In the eyes of the Egyptians she was a very powerful goddes and she symbolised the destructive force of the sun. Her cult was mainly located in Memphis. She is depicted with the fierce visage of a lioness atop the body of a woman, administered the divine retribution decreed by the gods. She held particular significance among healers, who were ordained as "pure-priests of Sekhmet," especially sought after for their incantations to ward off plagues. Amulets bearing her likeness were believed to ward off premature death.
