Louis Maimbourg, History of the League.

Paris, Mabre-Cramoisy, 1683. 2 volumes in 12mo, [32]-331-[4]p & [12]-484-[34]p.

Second edition, the same year as the original edition, of one of the historical works of Maimbourg, a Jesuit who was an important historian at the end of the 17th century. This is actually the first duodecimo edition that closely follows the quarto edition. This duodecimo edition also exists with an intermediary title "printed in Paris and sold in Lyon..." (the duodecimo editions closely followed the quarto editions and were sometimes even published at the same time).

Very rare copy in binding with arms, here in full green morocco with the arms of a young lady of France. This is Victoire, daughter of Louis XV, known as Madame Victoire.

The daughters of Louis XV, known as Mesdames de France: Marie-Adélaïde (1732-1800), Victoire (1733-1799), and Sophie (1734-1782) each had their own library, the volumes of which were largely bound by Fournier, a bookseller and bookbinder in Versailles. The bindings made for Madame Adelaïde were in red morocco, those for Madame Victoire in olive-green morocco, and those for Madame Sophie in lemon morocco.

Full green morocco, ribbed spine adorned, title and volume pieces, triple framing fillet on the boards with the arms in the center, gilded edges. One restored joint (upper joint of volume I), slight restoration at the foot of the other joint of volume I, first board of volume II slightly sunburned.

Copy auctioned in 2022 (Paris, Millon auction, February 22, 2022, no. 295) where it was estimated at 800/1000 euros.

Modern exlibris (stamp) JBM (not identified).

A fine copy, this work is rarely found bound with the arms.
