Pleasant copy preserved in a fine half-brown morocco binding. Spine decorated with a special die of Maxime Du Camp's cipher, a sort of visual signature, representing his belonging to prestigious bibliophiles. Enriched with his ex libris glued to the first inner cover, adorned with his initials and two crossed feathers.
Original edition enhanced with charming typographic ornaments (headbands, initials, and tailpieces). Very discreet foxing at the end of the book, binding in perfect condition.
Maxime Du Camp (1822-1894) was a French writer, journalist, and photographer, also known for being a passionate bibliophile. Famous for his close relationship with the writer Gustave Flaubert, with whom he shared a profound friendship and intellectual collaboration, especially during their travels in the East. An important figure in the 19th-century literary circle in France.
Marie-Sidonia de Lenoncourt was considered one of the most beautiful women in Europe. She was born in 1650, at the castle built by her grandfather, in Marolles-les-Bailly.
She died in 1685, at the age of 35, at the end of a tragic life, illustrating the fate of a woman caught in the intrigues of the court and the judicial machine of the time.
