【Product details】
This lot includes two hand-painted silk hanging scrolls (kakejiku) from the Showa period, each with a distinct subject and artist.
The scroll on the right features a serene depiction of Amitābha Buddha, seated gracefully on a rocky landscape beneath the full moon. Amitābha, known as Amida in Japanese, is the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life, widely revered in Pure Land Buddhism as the compassionate guide who welcomes souls into the Western Paradise. The work is rendered in soft tones and bears a seal from the artist. The roller ends are made of wood.
Visible stains, discolouration, and several small tears are present due to age. Please refer to the photos for condition.
The scroll on the left, by the artist Nakamura Tetsugai, presents a powerful image of a tiger beneath a luminous full moon. The tiger, perched atop a cliff, is vividly portrayed with intense gaze and expressive brushwork. The surrounding mist and dramatic lighting heighten the dynamic composition. The piece is signed and sealed by Tetsugai. The roller ends are resin.
There are some minor stains, but the overall condition is good for its age. Please see the images for reference.
These two scrolls, contrasting in both subject and mood—one spiritual, the other fierce—offer a compelling glimpse into traditional Japanese painting from the Showa era.
Dimensions: approx. H 182-185.5 cm W 58.5-60 cm
