Scuola Italiana (XVII-XVIII), Cerchia di Giovanni Maria delle Piane detto il Mulinaretto - Ritratto di Gentiluomo in armatura
Ancient painting, oil on canvas, dating from the late 17th to the first half of the 18th century, depicting a Portrait of a Gentleman in Armor.
A work of splendid quality whose style and writing characteristics show a lexicon that evokes the style of Giovanni Maria Delle Piane, known as il Mulinaretto (Genoa 1670 - Monticelli d’Ongina 1745). The artist, a student in Rome of Giovanni Battista Gaulli and returned to his homeland in 1684, became the most sought-after portraitist by the local nobility and the Farnese court between Parma and Piacenza, but he was also active for the Bourbons and highly requested by the Genoese noble patronage, which, enthusiastic about the sensitivities derived from the examples of Rigaud and Nicolas de Largillierre, chose the artist as the director of the city's dynastic iconographies.
The broad consensus he gathered among his contemporaries was attributable to a language that, while updated with the novelties imparted by the Roman environment, formally and technically embraced the innovations that were radiated from the court of Louis XIV due to the political ties that at that time connected the Republic of Genoa to France.
In good general condition considering the age of the painting, which shows a patina, there are a few scattered points of restoration as well as some light flaking and cracking of the painted surface. There are no significant conservation issues. The original canvas has a lining that appears to be in good condition and does not seem to require intervention. A fine craquelé related to the period is visible. The wooden frame seems to have been replaced together with the lining.
Framed in a splendid posthumous frame, which shows slight flaws and restorations.
Canvas dimensions: 92 x 66 cm. Frame dimensions: 114 x 88 cm.
Work accompanied by a photographic certificate of authenticity, as per current legal regulations.
