The Camera as Teacher
The Canon AE-1 Program is a revamp of the original AE-1 from 1981. Compared to that older camera, the AE-1 Program features a fully automatic program mode, an electronic metering display in the viewfinder, and a number of smaller changes that are explored in detail in a previous post where James compares the two cameras in detail. By all accounts, while it's a great camera for photographers of any level, its greatest strength is probably its ability to teach first-time users the three basic settings that determine the exposure of each photo: ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.
The ISO number refers to the sensitivity of the film or image sensor (James discusses this in detail in another article). Simply put, the higher the ISO number, the more sensitive the film or sensor is to light. In a digital camera, the sensitivity of the sensor can be set to whatever you want. Since the AE-1 Program is a film camera, the ISO numbers come from the film. For example, Kodak Ektar 100 is an ISO 100 film, while Cinestill 800 Tungsten is an ISO 800 film. It's simple.
Please look at each photo carefully. As this is a used copy, there are signs of age.
