Tektites (from the Greek tektos, molten) are naturally occurring glass objects that have been formed by the impact of large meteorites on the Earth's surface. Tektites are the driest known minerals, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, as most of the craters where tektites formed were under water prior to the impact. Partially molten zircon has also been discovered within some tektites. This, together with the water content, suggests that the tektites were formed under very high temperature and pressure (similar to that needed to form diamond).
Indochinites like the one in this batch were formed by the impact of a large meteorite 800,000 years ago, in what is now Laos, according to the most recent studies. The impact was brutal, so much so that molten material covered 10% of the Earth's surface, and indochinites have even been found in Antarctica.
The specimen from this lot is a good size, nice shape, and perfect finish. Don't miss this opportunity!
