Middle Ages - Large medieval Jacoba jug in Siegburg sandstone - 15th C. (No Reserve Price)

Middle Ages - Large medieval Jacoba jug in Siegburg sandstone - 15th C. (No Reserve Price)

Large Jacoba jug in Siegburg stoneware
Large stoneware pitcher with beige salt glaze. Slightly rounded cylindrical shape with a straight neck and ribbon handle. Neck decorated with parallel grooves
The base is festooned with thumb marks.
Germany, city of Siegburg, around the 15th century
Height 21.7 cm - width 9.8 cm

This 15th century stoneware pitcher comes from Siegburg, a German town near Cologne. From the 14th to the 17th century, Siegburg marketed its famous white stoneware, called Jacoba-Kanne, to which Countess Jacoba of Bavaria (1401-1436) gave her name. Often referred to as 'primitive' stoneware, because these are the first examples of high-temperature ceramic firing (1150°C).
With its elongated, footed shape and lack of decoration, this museum-worthy pitcher is characteristic of this production. Siegburg competed with the neighbouring towns of Raeren and Cologne in the production of stoneware pitchers.
Very good condition - small restoration on the lip
Origin: Germany, P.L.K. gallery.
Previously: former German private collection
