The skull may refer to the Memento Mori.
Memento mori is a Latin phrase meaning "Remember that you will die", it is a formula of medieval Christianity. Expressing the vanity of earthly life, it refers to the "art of dying", or Ars moriendi. It induces an ethic of detachment.
Its origins date back to Greco-Roman antiquity. In the time of Imperial Rome, when an emperor or a general returned to Rome after a successful campaign (military or political), he would ride through the streets on a chariot surrounded by a crowd, who would receive him with applause and honors. Behind him, on the chariot, a man would constantly whisper: “Memento Mori”.
It was actually a piece of advice, a rule of life: reminding the hero that his life was exactly like that of every human, and to perpetuate and sustain his triumphs, he had to remain humble, honest
Fascinatingly, Memento Mori art also has the power to remind us that any anxiety about death is futile. What could we fear from something we will not experience? Death is a non-event, the only lesson to be learned is to honor life. Or as Marcus Aurelius said: “Remember how precious is the privilege of living, breathing, and being happy. The perfection of our conduct consists in using each day that we live as if it were our last, and in never having impatience, languor, or falsehood. We must nourish the soul with the wisdom that comes from the acceptance of death.”
Other meanings of the skull:
- Ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Aztecs used the skull as a symbol of the cycle of death and rebirth;
- In the 15th century, people began adorning themselves with anything that reminded them of their mortality - skulls and skeletons included - creating what is known as "memento mori." Queen Victoria took this idea and started the trend of memorial jewelry that, rather than marking the inevitability of death, commemorated the memory of a loved one who had passed away;
- In more recent times, skulls have been seen with wings (symbolizing freedom in the sense of the dead being freed from their physical form into a freer spiritual form).
