Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, good fortune, youth, and beauty. She is the wife of the great god Vishnu, and the couple is often worshipped together under the name of Lakshmi-Narayana.
In the Mahabharata, Lakshmi was born from the churnings of the primordial milk ocean created by the gods and demons. After the intervention of Brahma and Vishnu, Lakshmi miraculously emerged from this sea of butter, completely clothed in white, radiating youth and beauty.
