Justinus - Giustino - 1548

Justinus - Giustino - 1548

Elegitur presents:

"The forty-four books of Justin from the external histories of Trogus Pompeius" is a printed version of the famous historical compendium written by Marcus Junianus Justinus, based on the monumental Historiae Philippicae by Pompeius Trogus.

Who was Justin and what does the work contain?
Marco Giuniano Giustino, probably lived between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, did not write an original work, but summarized and selected parts of the historical work of Pompey Trogus, a historian of the 1st century BC.

The original work, Historiae Philippicae, was a vast account of universal history with particular attention to Macedonia and the Hellenistic kingdoms. Justin made a summary of it in 44 books, focusing on the most significant events and characters.

Main themes discussed in the 44 books of Justin
The history of the Eastern peoples, such as the Assyrians, the Medes, and the Persians.
The Macedonian dynasty, with great attention to Philip II of Macedonia and Alexander the Great.
The spread of Hellenism and the events of the Hellenistic kingdoms after the death of Alexander.
Relations between East and West, including clashes between Greeks, Romans, and Asian peoples.
This version of the work also includes an appendix:

The addition of the epitome by Sextus Aurelius Victor
In the edition you cite, another text has been added to the work of Justin: the Epitome de Vita et Moribus Romanorum Imperatorum by Sextus Aurelius Victor (4th century AD). This is a biographical summary of the Roman emperors from Augustus to Theodosius I, written with a moralistic and critical tone.

Importance of the work and fortune in the Middle Ages and Renaissance
Giustino's work was widely read because it was shorter and more accessible than the original text of Trogo.
During the Middle Ages, it was used as an essential historical source on the history of the East and Macedonia.
In the Renaissance, with the interest in classical historiography, it was repeatedly reprinted and commented on.
