It was originally conceived as part of Pete Townshend’s ambitious but abandoned rock opera Lifehouse. Instead, the band distilled the best songs into Who’s Next, and the result was a masterpiece. The Who were among the first bands to use synthesizers in rock music. The design of the cover was coordinated by John Kosh.
