Magnificent book, as photogenic as those of Depardon, Klein or Henri Cartier-Bresson, with a unique touch of elegance and meticulousness similar to the photographs of Brassaï or Albert Renger Patzsch.
Some descriptive elements:
This exhibition catalog of the Rodin Museum confronts the works of American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) with those of Rodin, in a strong dialogue. The former may sculpt bodies through his lens, while the latter uses photography throughout his career, yet nothing seems to link the two artists. One chases the perfect form, the other insists on capturing movement in matter.
Nothing spontaneous in meticulous Mapplethorpe, while Rodin relies on the flashes of gesture, even accepting accidental expression. The highly controlled planes of one resonate with the tortured contours of the other. The fragmentation of bodies, their compulsive examination, the drapery that barely conceals them mark a common quest, equally sensual. Almost a century apart, the two works present countless similarities and produce striking diptychs.
Unique specimen, majestic, sold out, and yet still so timeless!
