'Jean le Clerc (Clericus), Geneva, 29 March 1657 - Amsterdam, 8 January 1736, descended from an exiled Picard Huguenot family. He studied theology in his birthplace from 1673 to 1676 and obtained his doctorate there. (...) Settled in Amsterdam in 1683. There he became professor of philosophy and Hebrew at the Remonstrant Seminary. In 1712 he succeeded P. van Limborgh as church historian. He maintained contacts and had disputes with the entire intellectual world of Europe, including with J. Locke (...). Le Clerc was editor of the 'Bibliothèque universelle et historique' (...). He also acted as publisher of the works of Erasmus. (...) Le Clerc's oeuvre is awe-inspiring in size and versatility, and the historical section forms only a small part of it'. E.O.G. Haitsma Mulier.
